Suppress Fire with Hand Extinguishers and Fixed Hose Reels

This certified course is designed to motivate and train a person to be able to identify classes of fire and fire suppression techniques. The trainee will also learn how to identify different types of fire extinguisher by band colour and understand symbols on various extinguishers. Attendees are trained to a high standard of learning with both instructor and peer assessments throughout the course. Included in the course are audio-visual presentations, practical demonstrations and practices with hand operated fire fighting equipment / extinguishers, this enables attendees to gain the confidence and competency to use the various techniques taught throughout the course.

Specific topics covered include:

  • Identifying classes of fire and fire suppression techniques
  • Identifying portable Fire Extinguishers by their band colour
  • Understanding the symbols on Fire Extinguishers
  • Selecting strategies to deal with the fire
  • Implementing the Fire Action Plan
  • Applying appropriate extinguishing media

The Unit Standard associated with this course is 3271 - Suppress fire with hand extinguishers and fixed hose reels (level 2, 1 credit)
