Advanced Life Support Course

As well as having an ethical and legal obligation to attend to a medical emergency, the public expects that a health professional will be able to assist them in a medical emergency situation within their training.

Oral health practitioners therefore need to have appropriate skills, training and equipment available to deal with potentially life-threatening conditions. The Medical Emergencies Practice Standard (Nov 2019) issued by the New Zealand Dental Association (NZDA) sets out the standards for medical emergencies in dental practice that all registered oral health practitioners must meet. Depending on their profession, the Practice Standard sets out different resuscitation training levels for different oral health practitioners .  Practitioners must successfully complete the minimum level of resuscitation training every two years.

This Life Support for Oral Health Practitioners course satisfies the requirements of the Practice Standard for oral health practitioners, and therefore meets the standards to enable appropriate and effective management of a medical emergency in dental practice. This course also contains all of the modules required for CORE Immediate or equivalent course set out in the Practice Standard.

Who should attend?

All staff in the dental practice should have appropriate training, including dental surgery assistants, reception and other staff who may have optional assessment of practical and theoretical skills.

A team approach to management of medical emergencies should be developed. Protocols should be in place so that all staff members know their role in managing emergency situations. The dental team should regularly practice scenarios within the dental practice setting.
