One of the first NZQA-aligned programmes of its kind in New Zealand, it supports the growing need for practical, compassionate responses to mental wellbeing.

Most workplaces have someone trained in physical first aid. But when someone is struggling mentally, many teams don’t have anyone who knows how to respond.

This mental health first aid course is designed for people who may be first to notice when someone is not coping, at work, at home, or in the community. You’ll learn how to recognise the signs of mental distress and respond with care, confidence, and respect.

A mental health first aider is someone trained to recognise when a person may be experiencing mental distress and to respond appropriately. This can include:

  • Notice early signs of mental health problems
  • Start a supportive, confidential conversation
  • Listen and provide initial reassurance
  • Check for immediate risk and act to keep the person safe

  • Help reduce stigma and promote a supportive culture around mental health

In many workplaces, this role sits alongside traditional first aid, ensuring support is available not just for physical injuries, but for mental wellbeing too.
