Pre-Hospital Emergency Care
Advanced first aid for isolated or high-risk outdoor environments where help may be delayed.
Pre-Hospital Emergency Care, often called PHEC, is advanced first aid for people working in isolated or high-risk outdoor environments where professional help may be delayed. It suits guides, forestry and agricultural workers, expedition leaders, event medics and remote site teams.
The course covers advanced patient assessment, airway management, major trauma, bleeding control, fractures and spinal care, environmental conditions such as hypothermia and heat illness, and extended casualty care over long time frames.
Training runs over 3 days in class, with pre-course study completed beforehand so classroom time can concentrate on practical skills and realistic outdoor scenarios.
Assessment is continuous, combining practical scenarios with written components, and leads to NZQA unit standard 29321 at Level 3, worth 14 credits. Your certification is valid for two years, and a dedicated refresher course is available to keep it current.
