Imagine this: You're at a family picnic; a child chokes on a piece of food. Or you're at work, and a colleague suddenly collapses. In those critical moments, what you actually remember and can confidently do from your first aid training makes all the difference. It's not just about having a certificate; it's about having the skills that stick.

That's where effective first aid training comes in. Getting your first aid certificate is a crucial step for many, whether for workplace compliance, professional development, or simply gaining the confidence to act in an emergency. But how do you ensure that your training goes beyond a tick-box exercise and truly prepares you for real-life situations?

What is a First Aid Certificate and Why Do You Need One?

A first aid certificate is formal recognition that you've completed an approved first aid course and demonstrated competency in essential life-saving skills. It's often a requirement for various professions (like childcare, education, or certain industrial roles) and provides peace of mind for individuals and families.  All MediTrain’s courses are NZQA, WorkSafe NZ and Ministry of Education approved.

While the primary goal is to equip you with the knowledge and skills to provide immediate care, the true value lies in retaining that information under pressure.

Can You Do First Aid Training Online?

Yes, with MediTrain, you complete the theory part of your first aid training online, at your own pace. It’s a flexible way to learn the key information when it suits you, and many people find it easier to absorb without the pressure of a full day in class.
Once your online learning is complete, you attend a one-day, in-person session where we go over the key concepts together. Your instructor will review the theory with you and help reinforce the material through discussion, example scenarios, and interactive tools like flashcards.
You’ll also take part in hands-on activities such as CPR practice, techniques for choking, bandaging, and other essential first aid skills. This mix of review and real practice helps the learning stick and gives you the confidence to use it when it counts.

Is CPR Included in First Aid Training?

Absolutely, yes! CPR is a fundamental component of all comprehensive first aid training. Our courses at MediTrain cover adult, child, and infant CPR, along with the correct use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). You'll get ample opportunity to practice these vital skills under the guidance of experienced instructors.

What Are the Next Steps After Getting Certified?

Getting your initial first aid certificate is a fantastic achievement, but maintaining your skills is key.

Recertification: First aid certificates have an expiry date of two years. It's crucial to book a Refresher first aid course before yours expires to keep your skills current and your certificate valid.

Extension Courses: Depending on your role or interest, you might consider more advanced training:

Life Support for Health Professionals: first aid course not required to do this course but is highly recommended. For dental assistants, pharmacists, vaccinators, and others in clinical roles. Covers emergency response in healthcare settings.

You don’t need a first aid certificate to enrol in this course, though we do recommend it. Having a basic understanding of first aid can help you get more out of the content, but it’s not a requirement.

Half-day course

Pre-Hospital Emergency Care: High-level training for emergency-focused industries. Includes unit standard 29321.

3-day course

Staying Confident: Regularly reviewing your first aid manual and keeping up-to-date with any changes in guidelines can help you stay confident in your knowledge. Our courses are updated annually to reflect the latest updates ensuring you always receive the most relevant information.
